Over a thousand years ago, mighty gladiators fought to the death as thousands of spectators watched in the Roman Colosseum. The Colosseum hosted countless gladiatorial shows and saw many gruesome deaths. The colossal structure still stands (although in ruins) and is visited by many as a popular tourist attraction. If you are visiting Rome for the first time, the Colosseum is an absolute must-see.

Emperor Vespasian began constructing the Colosseum in 72AD and it was completed in 80AD by his son and heir Titus. It is the largest Amphitheater ever built. Later on, emperor Domitian made modifications to the structure. The Colosseum is referred to as the Flavian Amphitheater since it was built by these three emperors of the Flavian dynasty. The Colosseum had an average audience of 65,000 spectators who sought entertainment through gladiatorial contests and other public events. However, the Colosseum was no longer used for such entertainment during the medieval era.

While visiting the Colosseum, make sure you go to the Arena floor, the hypogeum, and the upper level (accessible via tour only). You will have a spectacular view of the city from the upper level.  It is also worth seeing the Colosseum during the night in addition to viewing during the day.
